I went to art school and landscapes *still* intimidated me
Watching gorgeous, realistic landscapes emerge from students my own age made me want to dissolve into their artwork rather than present my own.
But the more I simplified my process (post-art school), the more I began to enjoy creating them.
Focusing on the feeling of the landscapes I created and not my ability to replicate everything perfectly was the breakthrough that changed it all.

Beautiful landscapes don’t have to be complicated
With simple shapes, textures and a repeatable process, you can turn an idea or reference photo into something charming and joyful.
Inside Little Landscapes in Procreate, you’ll learn the essentials of landscape composition as we create 5 little country scenes together. You can follow along exactly or enjoy the flexibility to make each project your own with different element, color and texture options.
By the end, you’ll have a fine-tuned process you can confidently apply to any of your own ideas in the future.

Simplifying Structures
You’ll learn how to take any complex structure you’d like to use in your landscapes and break it down into basic shapes, plus how to reuse it as a stamp brush in any future work!

Composition Basics
Learn how to use the rule of thirds and leading lines (with examples!) to create custom compositions, then put it to practice in the two projects that follow.

Painting Skies

Class projects
Create charming country scenes filled with character
Plan, sketch and paint 5 little landscapes!
Everything you need to create each project is included, along with full, beginner friendly step-by-step video instruction.

Flower Garden
Project 1
We kick off our course projects with a flower garden packed with the foliage and florals from our practice session! We layer shadow, midtone and highlight color blocking, then add hue variation to create depth and finish it all off with eye candy mark making.

Tire Swing
Project 2
In Project 2, we use a gorgeous deciduous tree as our primary subject, layering color, texture and doodle details to create plumes of leafy branches. We complete our little landscape with a tire swing and set the scene on a country hill covered with daisies.

Windmill
Project 3
Combining skills from previous practice sessions, we focus Project 3 on a windmill, set in a flower-filled grassy field. We discuss scale, proportion, applying shadows and highlights to a complex structure and guiding a viewer’s eye through the use of color.

Country Gate
Project 4
In Project 4, we add complexity to our composition sketch, fully integrating the rule of thirds and leading lines for a balanced layout to keep our viewer engaged. We manage multiple background, midground and foreground elements, all with intentional color, texture and detail choices.

Country House
Project 5
In our final project, we combine everything we’ve learned throughout the course and create a custom composition based on a reference image! As a finishing touch, we add in a summer sky filled with pillowy clouds and alter our sun’s positioning from the reference for bright, midday highlights and tightly cast shadows.

BONUS: Big Idea List
Now that you have your projects completed, what comes next? In this bonus video, we’ll walk through several ideas for converting your artwork into real, printed pieces you can sell or gift! Multiple online vendor links for each idea are included.

Let’s Make Little Landscapes Together

If we haven’t met before, my name is Teela, and landscapes were something that eluded me for years, even after art school. The “wonky mess” stress was all too real 🫠
I was determined, though, and began editing and simplifying difficult elements until things started to finally come together. I added more elements slowly, choosing doodles and simple marks instead of perfect lines and details.
I ended up with landscapes that didn’t look realistic, but felt like the feelings those landscapes gave me. This editing, simplifying and relying-on-feelings epiphany led to the process I’m proud to share throughout the lessons in this course. Because beautiful landscapes don’t need to be realistic or complicated to be joyful to create and share. 💗
Requirements for this course
Procreate App (v. 5.4.1 or newer)
This course was filmed using v.5.4.1 of the Procreate app, so you’ll need to be on that version or newer to fully follow along.
Apple iPad
We utilize pressure variation within many of the designs, so you’ll need to have an iPad that supports pressure sensitivity.
An iPad Stylus (pressure sensitive)
Since we’re utilizing pressure sensitivity settings, you’ll need a stylus that is compatible with your iPad. An Apple Pencil is recommended (not the USB-C one). A list of compatible iPads/Apple Pencils is available here.
Familiarity with the Procreate Interface
A basic familiarity with Procreate is all you’ll need to get started! If you’re brand new to Procreate, I recommend taking my free Procreate for Beginners course first so you’ll be able to follow along more comfortably.
You may be wondering...
What if I’ve never painted a landscape before/have limited drawing skills?
Then you’ll start with a process that meets you right where you are! If you can draw simple shapes, that’s all you need to build from to be able to complete every project in the course.
I’m brand new to Procreate, will I be able to follow along?
This course was created with beginners in mind and increases in complexity as it progresses. If this is one of your first times using Procreate, check out my free Procreate for Beginners course first for a more comfortable workflow.
